Bonitas 2027 Product Enhancements

Bonitas Medical Aid has released its 2027 contribution adjustments, offering important insight into how premiums will shift across the scheme’s diverse product range. These changes, which remain subject to approval by the Council for Medical Schemes, reflect broader healthcare cost trends and utilisation patterns within South Africa’s medical aid environment. For brokers, understanding these updates is essential to guiding clients through plan reviews, affordability assessments, and benefit optimisation for the year ahead.

Across the Bonitas portfolio, contribution increases for 2027 range between 7.3% and 11.5%, depending on the specific plan category. Comprehensive plans show some of the highest adjustments, with BonComprehensive increasing the main member contribution from R12 509 to R13 786, representing a 10.2% rise. BonClassic follows a similar pattern, increasing from R8 238 to R9 078, also at 10.2%. BonComplete reflects a slightly lower average increase of 9.7% across main, adult, and child dependants. These adjustments highlight the rising cost of extensive cover and higher claims utilisation within comprehensive benefit options.

Savings plans show more moderate increases. BonSave increases the main member contribution from R4 047 to R4 343, with adult dependants rising by 7.3%. BonPrime reflects a 9.0% average increase, while BonFit shows a 7.3% rise for adult dependants, with smaller adjustments for main and child dependants. These plans continue to offer a balance between structured cover and flexible day‑to‑day benefits through savings accounts.

Traditional plans also reflect steady increases. The Standard option rises from R5 929 to R6 474 for main members, a 9.2% adjustment, while the Primary option reflects an 8.0% increase across all member categories. These plans remain popular for members seeking predictable day‑to‑day benefits without a savings component.

The Edge range, designed for younger and digitally‑enabled members, shows consistent increases of 7.3% across BonStart and BonStart Plus. These plans continue to offer affordable entry‑level cover with modern digital engagement features.

Hospital plans show some of the highest increases for 2027. Hospital Standard rises from R3 561 to R3 942 for main members, representing a 10.7% increase. BonEssential reflects a 9.2% rise, while BonEssential Select increases by 7.7%. These adjustments align with rising hospitalisation costs and increased demand for in‑hospital benefits.

Income‑based plans under the BonCap option show increases of 11.5% across all income bands. For example, members earning between R12 401 and R20 100 will see their main member contribution rise from R2 111 to R2 354. These increases highlight the pressure on lower‑income tiers and the importance of income verification to ensure accurate placement within the correct band.

For members, the 2027 contribution adjustments present an opportunity to reassess their healthcare needs, benefit usage, and affordability. Brokers play a crucial role in helping clients navigate these changes, offering guidance on whether to remain on their current plan, upgrade for better cover, or downgrade to manage costs more effectively. With Bonitas maintaining a competitive position in the market, these updates provide a clear picture of how the scheme continues to balance affordability with comprehensive healthcare benefits.

Bonitas’ 2027 contribution increases reflect a measured response to rising healthcare costs, ensuring that members continue to receive value while maintaining financial sustainability. This summary equips brokers with a clear and concise overview to support informed client conversations throughout the year.
